Marlborough Pinot Noir2012 Corbans 1902 Marlborough Pinot Noir 750mL

The 2012 growing season was mostly spent waiting for a summer in Marlborough that never came. Surprisingly though, the vines produced low cropping levels with some cases up to a 30% reduction in fruit set which in turn delivered long, slow ripening allowing physiological ripeness to progress in balance with sugar accumulation. 1902 Pinot Noir was harvested at optimal flavour and physiological ripeness from strategically sited vineyards throughout the Wairau Plains. The wine has undergone malolatic fermentation and been matured in French Oak barriques, for a period of 10-12 months.

This Pinot Noir shows soft and elegant aromas of primary fruits and spice. The palate is lingering and full of succulent cherries and plums with a velvet finish.

Harvest Notes:

The 2012 growing season was mostly spent waiting for a summer in Marlborough that never came. Surprisingly though, the vines produced low cropping levels with some cases up to a 30% reduction in fruit set which in turn delivered long, slow ripening allowing physiological ripeness to progress in balance with sugar accumulation. We were pretty much 10-15 days behind in harvest and the saving grace was April; the only month where we achieved above average temperatures. The timing could not have been better – providing wines of intensity, balance and amazing flavour.

Fermentation Notes:

1902 Pinot Noir is harvested at optimal flavour and physiological ripeness from strategically sited vineyards throughout the Wairau Plains. The fruit is chilled overnight before being destemmed to tank and left to cold soak for 6-10 days for gentle colour, flavour and tannin extraction. The must is then warmed and the onset of fermentation begins by selected yeasts strains. Once fermented to dryness, the skins are gently pressed through our basket press and the wine is transferred to French oak barriques, where the wine undergoes malolatic fermentation and matures in barrel for the next 10-12 months. After this the 1902 Pinot Noir is blended, lightly egg white fined and filtered ready to bottle.
