Harvest Notes:

This barrel-fermented wine is sourced from a number of premium blocks in our Patutahi, and Ormond Estate vineyards in Gisborne. The soils of Ormond are fertile and free draining compared with Patutahi which have denser semi fertile soils. Ormond is warmer and wetter, whilst Patutahi is dryer and cooler. Generally Ormond will ripen before Patutahi. Ormond contributes honied stone fruit and a broader more textural palate. Patutahi is aromatic and elegant with crisp acidity and a mineral palate. The grapes and resulting wines differ but complement being the sum of the parts. The 2012 vintage was preceded by a sunny dry spring, punctuated by regular periods of rain that continued into vintage. Dry, sunny periods ensured continued ripening and good picking decisions resulted in ripe, good condition fruit being harvested. This has produced a wine with great varietal expression, concentration, and balance.

Fermentation Notes:

This wine has been fermented predominantly in French oak, 25% being new wood and the balance a combination of 1 to 3 year old. A portion of the wine underwent wild fermentation allowing a natural expression of the fruit with 50% undergoing malolactic fermentation . Weekly lees-stirring has added a creamy texture and savoury complexity. This has produced an outstanding example of Chardonnay from the Gisborne region.

Maturation Notes:

This wine was matured in French oak barriques being a combination of 25% new wood and the balance 1 to 3 year old.
