Marlborough Riesling2013 Wither Hills Wairau Valley Marlborough Riesling

Freshly squeezed limes, citrus pith, flint, subtle white peach with undertones of honey and lemongrass set the scene for this 2012 Marlborough Riesling. The palate is superbly balanced with bright natural acidity providing poise and structure throughout, complimenting the beautiful fruit weight on the mid palate and the succulent salty phenolics lurking in the background, giving texture and depth to an elegant pure wine.

Food and Wine Match:

A perfect match with salt and pepper squid, fresh ceviche with lime and coriander as well as an array of fine cheeses.

Harvest Notes:

Not since 1997 vintage have we had such a cool ripening season! It was mostly spent waiting for a summer in Marlborough that never came. Surprisingly though, the plant mitigated this challenge with low cropping levels with in some cases up to a 30% reduction in fruit set. This in turn delivered a longer and slower ripening curve, showing ‘true’ cool climate conditions and thus allowing physiological ripening in balance with sugar accumulation. We were pretty much 10-15 days behind in harvest and the saving grace was April; the only month where we achieved above average temperatures. The timing could not have been better – providing wines of intensity, balance and amazing flavour!

Fermentation Notes:

The fruit for this inaugural Wither Hills Riesling comes from four key sites around Marlborough’s Wairau Valley, including our Rarangi coastal site. Each of these sites were kept separate throughout the winemaking process to maintain vineyard integrity and provide the best possible blending components for this wine. The fruit was hand and machine picked, chilled overnight, gently pressed, ambient settled, racked and cool fermented in stainless steel tanks with selected yeast strains to enhance the individual vineyards aromas and flavours.
